State of the Union showcases urgent need for Congress to enact smart, consistent trade policies

The Michigan Smart Trade Alliance is calling for predictable trade policy that grows Michigan jobs, lowers costs for families and protects our relationship with Canada 

LANSING, Michigan — The bipartisan Michigan Smart Trade Alliance released the following statement following U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s comments on tariffs and trade during the State of the Union Address Tuesday evening: 

“We need consistent and stable trade policies that are outside of the political fray and that protect our national security and allow our economy to flourish,” said Mark Fisk, a spokesman for MISTA. “We need to move away from the chaos of erratic, on- and off-again tariffs that harm Michigan businesses and farmers and raise prices for families, and we need Congress to enact smart and consistent trade policies.” 

“Across Michigan, businesses and families want smart, consistent trade policies that create jobs, protect our relationship with Canada and lower prices,” said John Sellek, a spokesman for MISTA. “We hope Congress enacts trade policies that work for Michigan and that provide businesses the predictability they need to plan and grow. Our polling shows voters across party lines are worried about affordability and that they want certainty, not volatility.”
