Michigan Smart Trade Alliance: SCOTUS tariffs ruling puts spotlight on Congress to focus on consistent trade policies

New nonpartisan coalition says high court decision means time is now for Michiganders to call for smart, consistent trade policy

LANSING, Michigan The Michigan Smart Trade Alliance (MISTA) released the following comments following today’s ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court on President Trump’s authority to impose broad tariffs:

“Today’s decision makes one thing clear: Long-term trade policy must come from Congress, not emergency powers,” said Mark Fisk, spokesman for MISTA. “Michigan businesses and families need predictable trade rules that keep costs down and protect jobs.”

“Michigan’s economy is deeply tied to cross-border trade, particularly with Canada. Sudden tariff actions create uncertainty across manufacturing, agriculture, retail and supply chains. The Supreme Court has put the focus squarely on Congress to deliver stable, transparent trade policy,” said John Sellek, spokesman for MISTA. “Our polling shows voters across party lines are worried about prices. They want certainty, not volatility.”

MISTA’s coalition is growing.
