Michigan Smart Trade Alliance: 100% tariffs on Canada would damage Michigan’s economy

LANSING, Michigan — The Michigan Smart Trade Alliance (MISTA), a nonpartisan statewide public policy organization, released the following statements on the possibility of 100% tariffs on Canadian trade:

“Michigan’s economy is deeply intertwined with Canada’s, and a 100% tariff on our northern neighbor would devastate manufacturers, farmers and small businesses across our state,” said Mark Fisk, a spokesman for MISTA.   “These tariffs are poised to dramatically increase costs, eliminate jobs and raise prices for families already struggling with inflation. It’s important we focus on smart trade policy to strengthen our economy instead of new tariffs that would undermine it.”

“Bipartisan polling shows that 60% of Michiganders oppose disrupting the key trading relationship with Canada on autos and we’ve already seen negative impacts on tourism and other sectors,” said John Sellek, a   spokesman for MISTA. “Michigan businesses are seeking more discussion, away from the destructive sphere of politics, about the need for consistent trade policy that allows them to avoid cost increases in the near-term and plan for the long-term.”
